Washing soda is a 100% natural product, eco-friendly and totally biodegradable. It is great for people with allergies and is useful for a number of purposes. I use it regularly in the laundry, in place of commercial laundry detergents, but it is also useful in other places around your home too.
If you are keen to reduce your exposure to toxins in your environment, here is another way you can do it.
Washing soda is available from your local supermarket but this is one of those products it is worth buying in bulk from your local Bin Inn, or other bulk retailer.
Here are some of the ways you can use it.
In the kitchen
Cleaning Burnt Pans: A strong soda crystal solution is very effective for removing burnt on grease and food from pans, dishes and grills. Soak stubborn debris overnight then wash in hot water with detergent added.
Teapots and cups: Tannin stains can be easily removed by making a solution of soda crystals and leaving to soak for an hour or overnight. Then simply wipe away the film with a cloth. Rinse thoroughly.
Kettles: Descale your kettle by boiling a soda crystals solution and a raw potato inside. Rinse thoroughly. Do not use if your kettle has aluminium components.
Chopping Boards: Scrub with a soda crystals solution to remove stains and odours. It will leave no residual smell or taste once rinsed.
Blocked/Dirty Sinks: Pour a strong soda solution down the plughole and leave for an hour or two to dissolve the grease and grime. When clear rinse with water. Use regularly to prevent blockages and to keep water draining regularly.
Cooker Hoods: To help get rid of grease and odours mix a strong solution of soda crystals in the sink and leave the filter to soak for 15 minutes before rinsing.
In the laundry:
Low allergen laundering: If, for allergy reasons, regular laundry powder can’t be used, then substitute it with an equal amount of soda crystals. A longer wash or pre-soaking in soa crystals may be necessary for heavily soiled items.
General machine wash: By adding half a cup of soda crystals to your wash load you will soften the water and need to use less of your usual powder.
Greasy work clothes and stains: Soda crystals are renowned for their ability to dissolve grease. Soak greasy clothes and textiles overnight in a strong solution, before washing normally.
Always test fabrics for colour fastness before using soda crystals to soak, wash or remove stains.
Clean your washing machine: To clean the drum, remove smells and kill bacteria, add one cup of soda crystals to the detergent dispenser on a empty cycle and run on the longest hottest wash. This will eliminate any detergent from the pipes, leaving your washing machine sparkling and working more efficiently.
You can also use washing soda in the bathroom and elsewhere around the house, including cleaning cane furniture and BBQ grills. Tiles and grouting come up sparkling clean as do ceramic bathroom floors.
